2. What are EVA additives?
In this post, I’ll give you the low-down on the newest and most popular kind of additive in the world of rubber: EVA. You’ve probably seen it on the packaging and on computer keyboards, but you probably haven’t heard much about it.
EVA stands for ethylene vinyl acetate and is a softener that is added as an accelerator to many products such as automotive grade tires, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, etc. The downside: it can be toxic and cause respiratory problems if inhaled or swallowed (for example, if ingested or applied to the skin). The upside: it has no significant impact on human health.
In this post, I will briefly discuss its health impacts and how it can be used effectively to improve the performance of products such as tires, air conditioners, and flooring systems.
I will also highlight some other applications of EVA additives that are not so obvious (such as the impact they have on plastics).
3. How can EVA additives reduce the dosage of accelerator and cost?
In order to reduce the dosage of the accelerator, you need a good solution that can be quickly dispensed into natural and synthetic rubber. EVA additives are very popular right now because they are nontoxic, non-sulfide-containing, and are able to absorb up to 4 times their weight in water. You can use them with PE, PVC, ABS, and so on.
4. What are the benefits of using EVA additives?
The first thing many people ask about EVA additives is: are they safe? And the answer to that question is: yes, but only if you’re using them properly.
Most of the time, people use them like professional-grade chemicals. They are usually blended at about a 1:1 ratio and kept in a solution which is then applied to an object where the material becomes more viscous, such as tires. This is what most people call “injection molding” and it’s definitely not recommended. Not only is it dangerous and can be toxic, but it also takes forever (a lot longer than 25 minutes or so) and it can be incredibly expensive (for example, the filler in EVA additives thinners can cost anywhere from $100 to $250 per gallon). If you have any doubts about whether your product will work with EVA additives thinners or other Adhesives, do not use them with them!
So how do you mix EVA additives with other adhesives? It’s simple: add 1/2 oz of EVA additives in 1/2 oz of your selected adhesive, then shake that mixture up real good and spray or mist into the surface where you want your product to stick. Materials that contain a carboxylic acid group can be used in the manufacture of articles, such as rubber, synthetic plastics, and paper.
Although carboxylic acids are highly miscible with water, they are not miscible with most substances. Several additives are designed especially for use with carboxylic acids. These include adhesives, glues, sealants, and so forth.
